“What the hell are you doing here?” Adam snarled.

“Aren’t you happy to see me?” He wasn’t exactly unhappy to see his brother. At least, he would have been happy once upon a time. They had a good relationship until they were about fifteen. Then came the break.

These days, Aiden showing up meant trouble.

“A long time ago I would have been. Why are you here?”

“I need to talk to you.”

“I don’t see what there is to say.”

“Dad’s sick.”

Those words made Adam falter. His father was never sick, hadn’t been in all these years. Not even a cold. If Aiden came to him to tell him about it, it had to be serious.

“Let’s talk upstairs,” Adam said, nodding toward the stairs.
